Smoke Detectors

The Brown County Hazardous Material Recovery facility does not recycle smoke detectors. Many smoke detectors contain trace amounts of radiation and therefore it is recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency that you return them to the manufacturer for proper disposal.  For a list of smoke detector manufacturers, please check the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services website.

Some retailers will take back smoke alarms/detectors that they sell. Please contact the retail store at which you purchased your smoke detector for more information.
