Hazardous Material Recovery Awareness Week
To celebrate awareness week, the Brown County HHW Facility holds special hours during the first full week of October.
There are more than 90,000 households in Brown County. On average we collect 60 pounds of HHW material from our program participants or households, but only 1 in 10 people in the County are using our facility. This means there is approximately 5.5 million pounds of hazardous waste in our County's homes.
Though we have collected more than 10,000,000 pounds of hazardous waste since we opened in 1996, as fast as we collect it, people are buying and producing more.

Please do your part to properly manage hazardous materials and products in your home. Proper disposal of those wastes considered flammable, corrosive, reactive and toxic important because these materials can cause harm to children, pets, wildlife and the environment. Material such as paint, stain, solvents, cleaners, pesticides, batteries, aerosols, antifreeze, computers, electronics, fluorescent bulbs, etc. can be dangerous alone or when mixed together.
Find out about alternatives to common household cleaners and garden chemicals. Learn about options for disposing of leftover paint.
While there is a small fee for latex paint disposal as well as computer and electronic recycling, there is no charge for Brown County residents to properly dispose of other types of hazardous material.
